Held as a <strong>joint seminar with Kagoshima University School of Medicine<\/strong>, it took place in hybrid format at Kyoto University\u2019s Medical Innovation Center and online. A large number of students and staff from both universities attended, as the lecture unpacked the essence of the U.S. drug-discovery ecosystem model and the challenges facing Japan\u2019s life sciences.<\/p>\n<h2>Topic: The Reality of U.S. Biotech Ventures \u2014 the Soil Where New Therapeutics Are Born<\/h2>\n<p>Starting from the question, \u201cWhy doesn\u2019t good medical research automatically become a good drug?\u201d, the lecture argued that the difference lies not in the science itself but in the <strong>operational architecture<\/strong> that translates research into medical and business value \u2014 a perspective offered to the next generation of researchers and clinicians.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Kimura has worked across pharmaceutical R&amp;D and business development in Japan, the U.S. and Europe, U.S. biotech venture investing, and academia, contributing to the creation of several global medicines. Drawing on that experience, he spoke concretely about what actually happens in the gap between research and business.<\/p>\n<h3>Themes explored<\/h3>\n<p>The session offered perspectives relevant to those working across pharma, biotech, academia, investment and consulting.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Why does excellent medical research so often fail to become a drug \u2014 or a business?<\/li>\n<li>What is the \u201coperational architecture\u201d behind the U.S.\u2019s enduring lead in creating new medicines?<\/li>\n<li>A perspective for translating research into medical value, business value \u2014 and careers<\/li>\n<li>Designing the drug-discovery ecosystem that connects academia, biotech, investment and pharma<\/li>\n<li>The essential challenges Japan\u2019s life sciences should address next<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Above all, drawing on experience built through close engagement with the field\u2019s global top players, the talk unpacked how U.S. biotech investment and the drug-discovery ecosystem have been built \u2014 and the points that truly matter in how the United States came to construct them.<\/p>\n<p>Bloom X\u00b3 will continue to return practical know-how \u2014 connecting science, business, capital and talent \u2014 to academia and society.
